Matea Marinova, a master’s student from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies (FEEIT), won the third place at the 57th edition of the IEEE Region 8 Student Paper Contest (SPC). She is a research assistant at the Laboratory for Wireless and Mobile Networks working under the supervision of Professor Valentin Rakovic.Their paper titled “Accelerating Convergence in Split Learning for Time-Varying and Resource-Limited Environments” was first presented at the local SPC organized by the IEEE North Macedonia section. As the winning paper, it was then submitted to the IEEE Region 8 SPC. In the initial stage of the competition, the paper was chosen as one of the top five among the papers submitted from over 30 countries in Region 8 (Europe, the Middle East and Africa). The selection process was conducted anonymously by an international jury, whose members were: prof. Gianfranco Chicco from Italy, Prof. Joao Carlos Ferreira from Portugal, Prof. Paul Micallef from Malta and Prof. Vera Markovic from Serbia. The second part of the competition included an oral presentation of the best five papers, evaluated by the jury.
Matea presented the paper at the oral finals during the MELECON Conference, held from June 24 to June 27, 2024 in Porto (Portugal), where she secured the third place.
