  8.    Lecturer Dr Tomislav Shuminoski
  9.    Course Prerequisites

10.    Course Goals (acquired competencies):  The student will be enriched with theoretical and practical work and knowledge in the field of Delay-Tolerant Networks (DTNs). They will study the problems with networking in networks tolerant of huge delay and with problems in the connectivity. Analysis of protocols and possible application used in DTNs (sensor networks, space communications, mobile ad-hoc networks). Developing skills in planning and demonizing of DTNs. Moreover, the students will develop simulation models for DTNs.

11.    Course Syllabus: Introduction for Delay-Tolerant Networking (DTN). Networking in "stress" and high heterogeneous environments. Asynchronous message sending. Combination of store-and-forward message switching with physical data transmission/receiving.  Medium access control for delay-tolerant services. Quality of service; streaming control. Modeling of telecommunication traffic; modeling of delays and queues; modeling of delay-tolerant queues. DTN protocol stack. Deterministic and probabilistic routing protocols. DTN Security issues. DTN application requirements. Concrete DTN implementations: inter-planetary communications, submarine communications, sensor networks, mobile ad-hoc networks with minimal number of nodes and etc.

12.    Learning methods:  Lectures, presentations, interactive learning, practical and theoretical exercises (using simulations, software and hardware), team work, case study, invited lecturer(s), homework, project work and/or seminar work, e-learning (forums), consultations.

20.    Forms of assessment During the semester, two partial written exams are provided (at the middle and at the end of the semester, lasting 120 minutes) and a practical project (after the theoretical classes). The points from the partial exams, the points form the project work, the points from the homework assignments and the points from the laboratory exercises.
In the planned exam sessions, a written exam is taken (duration 120 minutes). The final grade includes the points from the written exam, the points of the project work, the points from the homework assignments and the points from the laboratory exercises.
