Course Title: Next Generation Optical Networks

Code: ФЕИТ10022

ECTS points: 6 ECTS

Number of classes per week:3+0+0+3

Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Borislav Popovski

Course Goals (acquired competencies): Upon finishing the course it is expected that the student will be able to solve problems related to the design of optical networks, to demonstrate an understanding of wavelength routing and switching and how it can be utilized to increase the capacity of a network, and be prepared to perform scientific work in the area of optical communications.

Subject of the course content: Enablingtechnologies for optical networks. Client optical networks: IP, MPLS, GMPLS, Gigabit-Ethernet (GE), Storage-Area Networks (SAN). Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) Networks. Optical layer, wavelength conversion, routing and wavelength assignment (RWA), light path design (LTD), QoS, traffic models. OTN standard. Control and management of optical networks, performance and fault management, configuration management. Network survivability. Photonic switching, Optical Burst Switching (OBS), Optical Packet Switching (OPS). Access networks: HFC, FTTH, FTTC. Passive optical networks (PON). EPON, GPON, WPON, WRPON. TDMA and WDMA access. Implementation. Intelligent optical transport systems (on-board automotive networks, aeronautics). Optical networks for distributed antenna systems. Optical wireless systems.
