10. Course Goals (acquired competencies): Acquiring knowledge on models of long transmission lines treated as circuits with distributed parameters. Mastering the symmetric components method for short circuits calculation. Ability to solve problems in the area of static and transient stability by the equal area method, as well as by numerical solution of differential equations. | ||||||||
11. Course Syllabus: Introduction. Field of study. Basic concepts. Transmission of electricity with long three-phase lines. Voltage and reactive power flow control: regulation transformers, reactive power injection and redistribution, U-Q characteristic of demand. Short circuits in power systems. Short circuits in general – types, causes and consequences. The waveform of the short circuit current, allowed simplifications. Symmetrical components, equivalent circuits, general relations. Matrix based analysis. Means and measures to limit short circuit currents. Stability of power systems – transient and dynamic. Electromechanical transients in general, concepts and definitions. Swing equation. Modeling. Angle power characteristics. Transient stability, method of small oscillations. Dynamic stability. Criterion of equal areas. Multimachine system. Measures to improve power system stability. | ||||||||

20. Forms of assessment | Twо mid/end-term exams (120 min each), or final exam (120 min). Student must complete and submit the required homework and project assignments, according to the schedule published at the course web site. Final mark is determined from the weighted average of scores from exams, homework, and project assignments. The use of books or notes of any kind, as well as a calculator, mobile phone, tablet or any other electronic device is allowed during the written exams. |
