Course: Internet of Things
Code: 3ФЕИТ07003
ECTS points: 6 ECTS
Number of classes per week: 3+0+0+3
Lecturer: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marija Kalendar
Course Goals (acquired competencies): Upon the completion of the course, students will gain knowledge of working with advanced concepts of wireless and sensor networks and applications, as well as the concepts of Internet of Things, including the design of appropriate devices, connecting devices, application-level and routing protocols and network security aspects. Students will be able to use the learned concepts by analyzing architectures and computer communication technologies for wireless Internet applications in a wide variety of domains: smart environments, industrial and home networking, as well as application in sensor and actuator networks. Students will also be able to familiarize themselves with and understand the relevant IoT business aspects and business models and their application.
Course Syllabus: Especially current and ongoing development area – Interent of Things, describes the evolution of networks from simple connection of digital information to networks where digital information is associated with the real-world physical devices. Internet of Things includes all buildings, places, things, products and customers that are connected to a global network and possibly equipped with sensors. The course will cover all concepts of this area, including its business development needs and its applications as well as the role of technologies necessary for its support (sensors, RFID, NFC, EPC architectures). Technologies needed for Internet of Things developement: Wireless IP networks and architectures, Design of smart devices and architectures, "Light" IP network protocols; Connecting smart objects and "very-small-things" to Internet, Communications in multi -hop and mesh networking; Low power and Lossy Networks (LLN); Embedded Web Services and Web of Things; Internet Security; Fields of application: RFID systems, smart grid system communication. Challenges of such an architecture to the security and privacy of the Internet of Things participants and users. Business aspects of the Internet of Things. The impact of the technologies used to define the business value of fine observation and management of business processes through IoT technologies. Knowledge and understanding of relevant potential business models and their application in specific projects.
