Course Goals (acquired competencies): Knowledge on the sensors specifications and characteristics analysis. Design of sensor-based electronic and mixed signal circuits. Sensor signal processing. Performance limits analysis of data acquisition systems. Timing, accuracy and resolution limits.
Course Syllabus: Sensor signals classification. Physical principles of sensors and transducers. System dynamics – 1st order and 2nd order systems, settling time and response. Sensor characteristics: sensitivity, resolution, accuracy, linearity, offset, gain, signal-to-noise ratio, measurement uncertainty, measurement errors. Active and passive sensors. Analog signal processing and filtering. Sensor signal conditioning circuits: based on time-to-digital and analog-to-digital conversion. Smart sensors. Computer-based data acquisition systems and virtual instrumentation. Interface (bus) systems and programming.
