10. Course Goals (acquired competencies): Introduction to the characteristics of lightning as a source of atmospheric surges (overvoltages), protection of power facilities, plants and overhead lines, coordination of insulation, methods of analysis, simulation and modeling, switching surges (overvoltages) and protection from them.
11. Course Syllabus: Introduction. Basic terms and definitions. Field of study. Lightning – a source of atmospheric surges and its characteristics. Protection against direct lightning strikes and ASPS. Protection of buildings, overhead lines and power plants. Wave propagation along the lines. Violation and rejection. Petersen rule. Sparks and surge arresters. Coordination of insulation. Grounding and pulse resistance. Modeling. Protection of switchboards and substations from intrusive waves. Commutation surges in the power system. Surges when switching on and off reactive elements and long lines. Application of Matlab / Simulink for switching surge analysis. Modeling and calculations.

The student should prepare the planned homework and project assignments and submit them according to the published dynamics on the website for the course.
The final grade is determined by the points obtained from the exams, homework and project assignments according to the respective weight coefficients.
It is not allowed to use literature in printed or electronic form during the exam, as well as mobile phones, tablets or any other electronic device. The use of a calculator is allowed, but the use of mobile phones, tablets or similar electronic devices is not allowed.
