10. Course Goals (acquired competencies): Introduction to specific standards and devices for wired and wireless networking. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: – understand the principle of operation of various network devices including: repeater, hub, bridge, switch and router; – independently design and connect network devices to a computer network: wired and wireless; – independently configure network devices: setting network interfaces, working with routing tables and routing protocols, creating virtual LANs, setting NAT/PAT, etc. |

11. Course Syllabus: Introduction to internetworking. Network devices: repeater and hub. Use of 802.3 standard. Methods for practical implementation of Ethernet LANs. Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections. Practical use of Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections. Media access control in Ethernet LANs. Network device: bridge. Algorithms for the transparent creation of network of devices. Collision domains. Network device: switch. Configuring switches. Configuring virtual LANs. Use of IEEE 802.11 set of protocols. Мedia access control in wireless LANs. Configuring and accessing wireless LAN networks. Use of ARP and RARP protocols. Address translation. Network device: router. Broadcast domains. Configuring router interfaces. Application of routing protocols in routing and forwarding. Configuring static routing. Configuring routing protocols: RIP, OSPF. Analysis of routing tables and forwarding tables. Internet access to private networks. Configuring private networks. NAT and PAT protocols. IP address management (IPAM). Network services: DNS and DHCP. Configuring DNS and DHCP. |

19. Conditions for acquiring teacher’s signature and for taking final exam | Practical (laboratory) exercises | |||||||
20. Forms of assessment | Two partial exams during the semester with a duration of 120 minutes or one full exam in a corresponding exam session with a duration of 120 minutes. Independent (seminar) project work by each student. The second partial exam includes presentation and defense of the independent (seminar) project work. The laboratory exercises are also graded. The final grade includes points from the exam, the project (seminar) work and the laboratory exercises. It is not allowed to use books, scripts, manuscripts or notes of any kind during the exam, as well as a calculator, mobile phone, tablet or any other electronic device. |
