10. | Course Goals (acquired competencies):
Practical knowledge and understanding of electrical and thermal effects on power electronics devices and circuits as well as the methods of protection from overheating and overloading. Capability to model, design and produce complex power electronics systems safe from overheating, overloading and with EMI protection. |

11. | Course Syllabus:
Introduction. Thermal considerations: heat transfer by conduction, radiation and convection; component temperature control and heat sinks. Review of basic magnetic and electric concepts. Basic electric and magnetic materials. Inductors and capacitors in power electronics. Design of magnetic components. Inductor design procedures. Transformer design procedures. Snubber Circuits: snubbers for diodes, thyristors and transistors, turn-off and turn-on snubbers, BJT, MOSFET and GTO snubber considerations. Gate and base drive circuits. Protection methods and circuits. |
