The “Neuro FEEIT” team made up of FEEIT students won the first place at the world finals of the IEEE Signal Processing Cup. The competition is organized by the IEEE SPS and the [Center for Translational Research in Neuroimaging and Data Science TReNDS, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA. The task this year is the development of a system for differentiating schizophrenia and bipolar psychosis using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI). The finals of the competition were held on June 5, 2023 in Rhodes, Greece, within the program of the largest world conference in the field of signal processing ICASSP 2023.
Neuro FEEIT was led by master’s student Daniela Janeva, and consisted of: Stefan Krsteski, Matea Tashkovska, Ana Krstevska, Angela Meshkova, Dusan Merdzhanovski, Mario Velichkovski and Marko Paloski. The team was mentored by assoc. prof. Branislav Gerazov.
We devoted a lot of time for solving the problem. An additional challenge was its interdisciplinary nature which is new and currently under research. Regardless of the great competition, we managed to find a solution that brought us the first place, says Janeva.
In the first phase of this global competition, Neuro FEEIT was ranked first from the three teams selected for the finals according to the official ranking on Kaggle. The second and third prizes at the competition went to the teams from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and the Israel Institute of Technology.
This victory represents a great achievement for our students and for us as a faculty and university. They proved their knowledge and skills competing with over 40 teams from all over the world. With that, they also once again confirmed the quality of the educational process that is nurtured at FEIT and UKIM, says Professor Gerazov from FEEIT.
