10. Course Goals (acquired competencies):

Students will obtain knowledge about application of renewable energy potential with emphasis on wind, hydro, solar thermal and biomass as renewable energy sources. This knowledge will give the students wider view of Renewable energy sources (RES) and help them to make a choice for deeply research work in particular RES.

11. Course Syllabus:

Comparison of conventional and non-conventional energy sources. Environment and renewable energy sources (RES). Wind energy: historical aspects. Wind energy potential. Fundamental parameters and laws that influent wind energy conversion. Small hydroplants as RES. Objects and classification of SHP. Elecricity production and grid connection. Guideline for designing SHP. Solar radiation on the Earth’s surface and its characteristics. Types of solar thermal collectors. Systems with solar thermal collectors.  Aspects of biomass utilization as RES. Thermochemical conversion. Procedure and preparation in the biomass burning process. Technologies for the conversion of energy from biomass into heat and electricity.

12. Learning methods:

Lectures and exercises with presentations and simulations. Homeworks and project tasks and seminar works.
