Course Goals (acquired competencies): Gathering knowledge on energy and climate change, economic and environmental assessments of energy technologies, key concepts of sustainable development, as well as the risks and impacts of energy technologies on environment and health.
Course Syllabus: 1. Energy and climate change (UNFCCC; Paris Agreement; Greenhouse gases emissions from energy sector and mitigation measures; Energy planning: mitigation scenarios – technical analysis and socioeconomic impacts). 2. Environmental and economic assessment of energy technologies (Risks and impacts of energy technologies: Comparative analyses; Assessment methods – Marginal Cost (MAC) Curve; Prioritization and technology transfer). 3. Sustainable development (Methods for comparison and measurement – metrics and indicators; Multi-criteria analyses, external costs; Energy policy in function of sustainable development – energy security, climate change mitigation, renewable energy and energy efficiency support schemes, intersectoral analyses (agriculture and forestry), job creation, emission tax and trading, feed-in tariffs and green certificates; Green economy and better governance – energy and environment in function of rural development; green jobs and innovations, poverty eradication, decoupling the growth and resources; Macroeconomic analyses, trends and projections, financial and regulatory mechanisms).
