Course Goals (acquired competencies): Understanding the models of FACTS devices with power electronics in power system and possibilities for implementation in active and reactive power flow management, stability improvement and voltage regulation in power system. Ability to solve complex practical problems for application of FACTS devices in power system using a variety of simulation packages.

Course Syllabus: Introduction in power electronics. Principle of operation and modeling of energy converters. Connecting FACTS devices in power systems. Types of FACTS devices and their application to improve the performance of power systems. Thyristor-Controlled Reactor (TCR), Static Var Compensator (SVC), Thyristor-Controlled Series Compensation (TCSC), Voltage-Sourced Converter (VSC), Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC), Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC). Regulation of active and reactive power flow. Voltage regulation. Improving transient and dynamic stability. Optimum placement, sizing and control of FACTS devices. Application of software packages for analysis of power system with FACTS devices.
