Course: Small Hydro Power Plants
Code: 3ФЕИТ04008
ECTS points: 6 ECTS
Number of classes per week: 3+0+0+3
Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Vangel Fushtikj
Course Goals (acquired competencies): The students obtain wider and expert’ knowledge for the importance of the small hydro power plants as renewable resource for electricity generation. The students learn on real SHPP projects, their design and construction with selection and specification of the electro-mechanical equipment and connecting to the MV distribution grid.
Course Syllabus: The importance of the small hydro power plants (SHPP) as the renewable energy resource for electricity generation. Classification of SHPP. The SHPP’ facilities and their incorporation in the environment. The construction site selection. Types of SHPP: run-of-river, on mountain’ water stream, with a dam, with derivation channel, etc. Water intakes, channels and pipelines. Powerhouse. Turbines. Generators. Rehabilitation of the SHPP. Electrical part of the plant. Design documentation and tender specifications for SHPP projects. Installed capacity, installed water flow and possible electricity generation. Metering and auxiliary systems. Standardization and SHPP. Requirements for generated electricity quality assurance. Connecting to the grid. Control and monitoring of SHPP. Risk management of SHPP projects.
